An acclaimed clarinetist and composer in both capacities, Aurelian Băcan began his journey in the world of music at the age of six with the study of the accordion. At the age of 11, he discovered the clarinet under the guidance of Professor Petrea Gogu at the Hariclea Darclée Arts High School in Brăi- la, which he perfected in high school in the class of Prof. László Gheorghe of the Sigismund Toduță College of Music in Cluj-Napoca and further, until graduating bachelor’s and master’s degrees (in the class of university professor Dr. Ioan Goilă and university associate Dr. Flavius Trif, within the Gheorghe Dima National Academy of Music in Cluj-Napoca). His mentors in the chamber music discipline were: university Prof. Dr. Ferenc László, university professor Dr. Veronica Negreanu, and associate professor Dr. Răzvan Poptean. He is active both as a soloist and as a member of various ensembles, such as the AdHoc Ensemble, the Duende Quintet, the Axis Mundi Trio, etc., and also a member of the Union of Composers and Musicologists from Romania. He later graduated from the Faculty of Composition at the same academy (with Prof. Dr. Adrian Pop and Prof. Dr. Hans Peter Türk). His qualities have been recognized by names such as György Kurtág, Reto Bieri, and François Benda in various master classes. In 2019, he obtained summa cum laude the title of doctor in music (coordinator university professor Dr. Cristian Misievici) for the thesis entitled: The compositional act and its dynamics from the perspective of the performing composer – Reflections on the personal creative path. He is currently a solo clarinetist in the Transilvania Philharmonic Orchestra from Cluj-Napoca (member since 2009) and a doctoral university lecturer at the Gheorghe Dima National Academy of Music (since 2019) at the Department of chamber music, remaining very active in the field of composition.
