An emblematic representative of the Romanian horn school, Professor Alexandru Marc, PhD emeritus, graduated in 1978 from the Gheorghe Dima Conservatory of Music in Cluj-Napoca with a maximum score. He followed spe- cialization courses in France from 1982 to 1983 with Prof. J. Magnardy and Paul Warin.
In 1986, he won the position of first horn player in the Transilvania Philharmonic in Cluj-Napoca and later became the head of the department. As a soloist and member of various chamber and orchestral ensembles, he has performed in Romania, Spain, France, Germany, South Korea, Sweden, Norway, Italy, Bulgaria, Luxembourg, Holland, Belgium, Austria, etc., alongside world-renowned conductors such as E. Civjel, L. Nicolaev, E. Bergel, M. Inoue, A. Dervaux, Cr. Mandeal, E. Simon, O. Trilk, H. Andreescu, R. Neve, M. Cristescu, M. Brediceanu, I. I. Galati, I. Baciu, P. Popescu, etc.
Throughout his career, he established professional contacts with representatives of various horn schools around the world, such as H. Bauman, H. Pitzka, E. Tirviliger, Charles ORNead, René Prage, David Pandolfi, David Johnson, Ștefan Dohr, Radek Baborák, etc. He is a member of the International Horn Players’ society and, as a soloist and musician of many chamber ensembles, he is a laureate in numerous competitions.
The repertoire addressed by Prof. Alexandru Marc, PhD, is extremely vast, ranging from pre-classics to contemporary music. In 1996, he won a university lecturer position at the Gheorghe Dima Academy in Cluj-Napoca, horn class. In 2007, he won the PhD title, head of the wind instruments and percussion department, and later became the director of the Department of String Instruments, Woodwinds, and Percussion through the same procedure. As a result of his teaching results, he was awarded the PhD Emeritus title in 2013.
He is the author of the reference book “Wind Technique,” along with eight other specialized publications. In 2024, he registered the “Alexandru Marc” Wind Technique at OSIM. As a pedagogue, he trained generations of musicians over the decades, winners of national and international competitions, who later became members of famous orchestras from Romania, Europe, and the American and South African continents. He is the founder of the horn summer courses in Ruseşti, a project in its 17th edition.
