Laurențiu Sima serves as the Principal Tuba Player at the “George Enescu” Philharmonic Orchestra in Bucharest and also holds the position of Tuba Teacher at the National University of Music in Bucharest. He graduated from the Iacob Mureșianu Military High School of Music in Bucharest in 1996, specializing in tuba under the mentorship of Professor Ion Popescu. Furthering his education, he pursued tuba studies at the University of Music in Bucharest, completing his degree in 2001 under the guidance of Professor Ion Popescu. During his high school years, he achieved numerous awards at national competitions. Since 1999, he has been an integral member of the “Paul Constantinescu” Philharmonic in Ploiești, assuming the role of Principal Tuba Player at the “George Enescu” Philharmonic Orchestra in Bucharest in 2001. Between 1999 and 2001, he imparted his knowledge as a teacher at the Military High School of Music in Bucharest. In 2019, he was appointed as the Associate Tuba Teacher at the University of Music in Bucharest, and as of 2023, he has been instructing the same discipline at the “Dinu Lipatti” College of Music in Bucharest, catering to grades V-XII. Laurențiu Sima has collaborated with various renowned orchestras including the Bucharest, Râmnicu Vâlcea, Craiova, and Giurgiu Philharmonics, and has graced stages in Germany, Austria, Spain, Italy, Greece, and Japan. As a soloist, he made his debut in 2016 at the “Paul Constantinescu” Philharmonic in Ploiești, performing Ralph Vaughan Williams’ concerto for tuba and orchestra under the baton of Walter Hilgers, former tubist of the Vienna Philharmonic. Since 2020, he has showcased his talent in solo concerts with philharmonics across Romania. In 2023, Laurențiu Sima premiered Jan Tegtmeyer’s concerto for tuba and orchestra, marking its inaugural performance in Romania. He is a founding member of the European Union Orchestra and contributes as a member of the Athenaeum Brass Quintet and various Romanian brass chamber ensembles, presenting recitals both domestically and internationally. In recognition of his contributions, he was honored with the Cultural Merit Class II medal by the President of Romania in 2004.
