Julian studied trumpet and pedagogy at the “George Enescu Academy of Music” with Ioan Rusu. He attended masterclasses and competitions, winning prizes at the National Competition of Interpretation in 1989, 1991, and 1992, as well as at competitions in Constanța (Romania) in 1992 and Bayreuth (Germany) in 1990. With a vast repertoire, he has recorded works by Dittersdorf, Haydn, Pichl, Mozart, Vivaldi, and Rachmaninoff on 4 CDs for Olympia, London. Julian Lupu has performed in various countries including Italy, Romania, France, Switzerland, Germany, Spain, Turkey, England, Japan, Brazil, and the USA. He has participated in several music festivals such as the Enescu Music Festival, Istanbul Music Festival, Mersin Music Festival, Bodrum Music Festival, Ankara Music Festival, Salzburg Music Festival, Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival, BBC Proms Festival 2014, Italian Brass Week 2013, Schagerl Brass Festival 2014, and Sauerland Brass Festival 2016. As a solo trumpeter, he has performed with leading conductors such as Gürer Aykal, Ion Marin, Gennady Rozhdestvensky, Vladimir Fedoseyev, Neeme Järvi, İşin Metin, Serge Baudo, Alexander Dimitriev, Massimo Freccia, Jean Fournet, Howard Griffiths, Peter Gülke, Ernest Martínez Izquierdo, Nello Santi, Emil Tabakov, Yoel Levi, and Vladimir Ashkenazy. Julian Lupu has performed a wide range of repertoire including works by J.B.G. Veruda, A. Vivaldi, D. Shostakovich, J.N. Hummel, J. Haydn, Enescu, Dinicu, Toelli, Telemann, Albinoni, Hummel, Purcell, Cords, Hubeau, Pauer, Thome, Khachaturian, Tomasi, Arutunian, Krijek, Korsakov, Scelokov, Goedicke, Vejvanovsky, Kriukov, Jolivet, Bozza, Arban, Clarke, and Böhme. In March 2017, he gave masterclasses and concerts in Rio de Janeiro and Brasília. In April 2017, he played solo with the Bursa Symphony Orchestra and gave a masterclass at Uludağ University in Turkey. Between October 22-27, 2017, he gave masterclasses and a solo concert at the “Jazz Trumpet Festival” in São Paulo. In November 2017, he performed concerts with the Golden Horn Brass in Bucharest, Chișinău, and Bellapais, Cyprus. In November 2018, he gave a masterclass in Rostock, Germany. In January 2019, he performed a solo concert with his son in Izmir and Antalya. In 2019, he will give masterclasses and a solo concert in Hildesheim, Germany. In September 2019, he is invited to São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro for seminars, masterclasses, and a solo concert. He has been a member of the Golden Horn Brass for 14 years, giving several concerts with this successful quintet and winning the Donizetti Prize in 2014. Julian Lupu exclusively plays THEIN Trumpets.
